11 Camping Tips and Essentials for Your Next Adventure

June 14, 2018

Camping is a great way to spend quality family time during the summer but trying to figure out what to pack can be quite the brain strain. Whether you’re new to camping or just in need of a refresher, here’s some camping tips and camping essentials to ensure that your trip into the wilderness isn’t more adventurous than you intended.

11 Camping Essentials

1.        1. Shelter- If you don’t plan on sleeping under the stars, don’t forget to pack a tent, bring an RV or camper, or check with your campground about cabins.

TIP: Even if you do plan on sleeping under the stars, it is wise to bring at least a tent in case of any unplanned elements, such as rain.

TIP: If you’re planning on tenting it and you haven’t gone camping in a while, make sure to air out your tent ahead of time so it isn’t musty.

2.        2. Sleeping Bag and Pillow- Nights can get chilly, so make sure you pack a quality sleeping bag to keep you warm.

TIP: Pillows tend to smell like campfire and outdoors for a couple days after you return from camping, so if you want a fresh smell when you come back, pack different pillows than your current bedroom pillows.

3.        3. Air Mattress, Cot, or Sleeping Mat- Even the toughest of campers would benefit from this. Just because you’re tenting it, does not mean you need to rough it completely.

          4. Flashlight or Lanterns- Once it gets dark out, you’re going to need a light source, so you can see where you’re going without injuring yourself. It is also known that light helps prevent any villains from those scary stories around the bonfire from getting you.

TIP: Make sure to bring extra batteries in case your flashlight dies.

5.       5. Bug Repellant- Bugs can be the easiest way to ruin a fun camping weekend. Make sure you wear your bug repellant, so the mosquitos don’t eat you alive.

6.       6. Campfire Supplies- Between you and the campground, make sure you have enough supplies to make fires. Camping isn’t camping without the campfire.

7.       7. Kitchen Ware- Ultimately the food you bring while camping will determine what kitchen ware you need, but some good general things to bring are: bowls, plates, eating utensils, cast iron (or other heat safe) pot and pan, heat safe spoon and spatula, heat safe oven mitts, cooler with ice, can opener, dish soap, and a plastic tub for washing your dishes.

TIP: A camping stove can make meal prep easier than cooking over the fire.

8.       8. Nonperishable Food and Bottled Water- Nonperishable food is easier to store while camping, and many families find bringing gallons of water and bottled water easier for drinking, cooking, cleaning, washing hands, etc. than purifying water with a purifier.

TIP:  Store your food in your car when you’re not cooking or eating so animals don’t scavenge through it.

9.      9. Toiletries and Toilet Paper- Even if you are camping in a place that has fully functional bathrooms, bringing toilet paper is smart in case they run out.

TIP:  Pack your sunscreen in your toiletries bag so you don’t forget it.

10.   10. Camping clothes- When packing for camping clothes, you will want to pack for weather of all sorts—chilly nights to hot or rainy days. You should also bring older clothes that can get dirty and possibly ripped.

11.   11. First-Aid Kit- You should always be prepared; injuries could happen.

TIP: To help with knowing exactly what you need to pack, contact your campground and see what camping supplies they already provide. Does the campground have picnic tables, firewood, fully functional bathrooms?

TIP: Do a test-run in your backyard to ensure nothing is forgotten and everything runs smoothly.

Camping can go very smoothly and as to plan when you follow a guideline and adequately prepare. Plan ahead and enjoy your time in the great outdoors!
